Overview
Packaging Unit Labels print carton and pallet labels that show the quantity relations between an item's packaging levels, for example how many base units go into a handling unit, how many handling units into an inner pack, and how many inner packs onto an outer pack or pallet. The relations are derived from the item's units of measure, so the label always reflects the current packaging setup without any manual data entry on the label itself.
Packaging Unit Types
Packaging levels are defined by tagging an item's units of measure with a Packaging Unit Type on the Item Units of Measure page. Three types are available:

Each packaging unit type can only be assigned to one unit of measure per item. If you try to assign the same type to a second unit of measure, the assignment is rejected with an error identifying the unit that already holds it.
Assigning packaging unit types
- Open the Item Card and go to Item Units of Measure.
- On each relevant unit of measure, set the Packaging Unit Type to Handling Unit of Measure, Inner Package, or Outer Package.
- Repeat for the item's other packaging levels.
How the Label Resolves Quantities
When a packaging label is printed, the app resolves up to four packaging levels for the item and prints a caption and quantity for each. Depending on how the item's units of measure are set up, the levels shown can include:
- The handling unit of measure, with the handling quantity per inner pack, per outer pack, or a plain handling quantity.
- The inner pack, with the quantity of inner packs per outer pack.
- The outer pack, with the handling quantity per outer pack.
- The base unit of measure, with the base quantity per handling unit.
If the item has no packaging setup beyond a base and handling unit, the label falls back to showing the base unit and the base quantity per handling unit. This means the same label works for simply and richly configured items alike.
Printing a Packaging Unit Label
- Make sure the item's units of measure are tagged with the correct packaging unit types.
- Print the packaging label from the relevant document using the Label Packaging Unit report layout. The label resolves the packaging levels and quantity relations automatically and prints them.
Note: Barcodes on the packaging label are encoded automatically with the built-in barcode fonts (Code 39, Code 128, or EAN-13). EAN-13 values must be exactly 13 characters, otherwise the barcode is left blank.
