Feature Overview
When a Sales Company and a Supply Company trade through Intercompany, the resulting sales and purchase invoices need to carry the right cross-references back to each other, keep dimensions consistent across both companies' books, and — where required — bring compliance attachments (digital vouchers) along with them. This feature is about that "last mile" of correctness on the invoice itself: linking invoice lines back to the originating purchase/sales order lines, mapping dimensions between companies so consolidated reporting lines up, and transferring the incoming-document attachment that a digital voucher requires.
Dimension mapping works through a simple flag: a dimension is marked to participate in intercompany synchronization, and the app carries its value across from the Sales Company's document to the Supply Company's (or vice versa) as transactions flow. Digital voucher generation itself is no longer something Intercompany controls — as of version 28.4 it is fully owned by standard Business Central's Digital Voucher Setup. Intercompany's role is limited to transferring the Incoming Document attachment (the voucher file) to the partner side and updating the posted purchase document with the correct Incoming Document Entry No., so the attachment lands where BC's standard bookkeeping expects it.

Getting Started
- Open the IC Partner Card for the partner you trade with and confirm the partner connection is active (see Setting Up a Partner Company).
- Go to Dimensions and, for each dimension you want kept consistent between the two companies, set Use as IC Dimension to Yes.
- If you need compliance attachments on intercompany invoices, configure Digital Voucher Setup in standard Business Central on both companies — Intercompany does not need separate configuration for this.
- Post a sales invoice on the Sales Company side (or let the automatic flow post it) and confirm the linked purchase invoice appears on the Supply Company side, with cross-reference fields (order/line numbers) populated.
- If a voucher attachment was expected, open the resulting posted purchase invoice's Incoming Document and confirm the attachment transferred from the partner.
Related Features
Cross-Company Invoicing depends on Automatic Order Creation Between Companies to establish the sales-order/purchase-order pair that invoice lines cross-reference back to — this feature only concerns what happens to the invoice once it exists, not how it's created. It also relies on Sending and Receiving Documents Automatically to carry the invoice attachment (digital voucher) across the partner connection. Dimension mapping configured here affects reporting wherever intercompany dimensions are used elsewhere in the app.
User Stories
Tracing a purchase invoice back to its sales order
As a Sales Company user
I want to see which sales order and sales order line a purchase invoice line originated from
So that I can reconcile invoices without manually cross-checking documents
Setup:
- No setup required — the app populates these fields automatically whenever an intercompany purchase invoice line is created from a sales-side transaction.
- On the posted or open purchase invoice, review the intercompany-specific fields shown alongside the standard invoice line to see the linked sales order number and line number.
Tracing a sales invoice back to a partner's purchase order
As a Supply Company user
I want to see which purchase order (on the partner's side) and customer order number a sales invoice relates to
So that I can answer partner questions about a specific invoice without contacting them
Setup:
- No setup required — the Customer Order No. and Sell-to IC Partner Code fields are set automatically when the invoice is created from an intercompany sales order.
- Review these fields directly on the sales invoice.
Note: The Customer Order No. field is not editable — it always reflects the value carried over from the originating IC inbox transaction.
Keeping a dimension consistent across both companies' books
As a finance user
I want to mark a specific dimension as an intercompany dimension
So that its value is carried across automatically when transactions flow between the Sales Company and Supply Company, keeping consolidated reporting consistent
Setup:
- Go to Dimensions.
- Open the dimension you want synchronized and set Use as IC Dimension to Yes.
- Post intercompany transactions as normal — the dimension value now flows with the transaction.
Understanding what happened to the standalone IC Dimensions Setup page
As a consultant configuring a new Intercompany installation
I want to understand why Business Central's standard IC Dimensions Setup page shows a redirect message instead of its usual fields
So that I don't try to configure dimension synchronization in the wrong place
Setup:
- Open the standard IC Dimensions Setup page — while Intercompany is active, its normal fields are hidden and replaced with a message directing you to the Intercompany Setup page instead.
- Perform all intercompany dimension configuration from the Dimensions page's Use as IC Dimension field (US-03) rather than from this standard page.
Note: This page is only redirected while Intercompany is enabled for the company. If Intercompany is later disabled, the standard fields become available again.
Sending a digital voucher attachment to the partner
As a finance user with Digital Voucher compliance requirements
I want to have the sales document's compliance attachment transferred to my partner automatically
So that the partner's posted purchase document carries the correct voucher without me sending it manually
Setup:
- Configure standard Business Central's Digital Voucher Setup in both the Sales Company and Supply Company — this is where voucher generation itself is controlled, not in Intercompany.
- Post the sales document as normal. When the corresponding IC transaction is exported, any Incoming Document attachment is transferred to the partner alongside it.
- On the Supply Company (or Sales Company, depending on transaction direction) side, the posted purchase document's Incoming Document Entry No. is updated automatically once the attachment is received, so the standard Incoming Documents feature picks it up correctly.
Note: As of version 28.4, the older per-partner "Generate Digital Voucher" setting on the IC Partner Card is obsolete — voucher generation is fully controlled by standard BC's Digital Voucher Setup. Intercompany's only remaining role is transferring the attachment itself.
Matching purchase invoice lines to receipts (Not Fully Matched)
As an accounts payable user
I want to see which lines on an intercompany purchase invoice are not fully matched to a receipt
So that I can investigate mismatches before running batch posting
Setup:
- Open the Purchase Invoice for an intercompany purchase — the Not Fully Matched field is shown when Intercompany is active.
- A line shows Yes when either its Receipt No. or Receipt Line No. is missing.
- When running the batch post purchase invoice report, filter to Not Fully Matched = Yes to review only the mismatched lines before posting.
Recalculating receipt matching on a purchase invoice
As an accounts payable user
I want to recalculate the Receipt No. and Receipt Line No. values on an intercompany purchase invoice
So that I can correct matching after a data issue without re-creating the document
Setup:
- Open the affected Purchase Invoice.
- Under the Intercompany action group, select Recalculate Receipt Nos. & Receipt Line Nos.
- The app re-derives the correct receipt references for all lines on the invoice.
