Supply Order Hierarchy

Feature Overview

Supply Order Hierarchy is the production and procurement backbone of Sales Configurator. Once a sales line has been configured with the customer's requirements, Supply Order Hierarchy lets you create the corresponding production or assembly order — or purchase order — directly from the sales line. The type of order created (Production Order or Assembly Order) is determined automatically by the replenishment setup on the item or stockkeeping unit.

The "hierarchy" concept is central to this feature: a configurable product often consists of a multi-level BOM where each sub-item may itself need to be produced or purchased. Supply Order Hierarchy tracks all of these related orders together under a shared Reference Number, linking them back to the originating sales line. This gives you a complete picture of all supply activity for a single customer order — from the top-level finished good all the way down to purchased raw materials.

From the sales line, you can view the entire supply order tree at any time using the Show Order Hierarchy action. Orders in the hierarchy can be individually opened, and the whole hierarchy can be refreshed, replanned, or deleted in one operation. Items that should be included in the automatic hierarchy traversal are marked with Include in Sales Configurator Hierarchy on the item or stockkeeping unit card — items without this flag are treated as stock items and are not exploded further.

Getting Started

  1. On each item that should be exploded as part of a configurator hierarchy, open the Item Card and enable Include in Sales Configurator Hierarchy. Note: the item's replenishment system must be set to Prod. Order or Assembly with the manufacturing or assembly policy set to Make-to-Order for the inclusion flag to be valid.
  2. Optionally, set the same flag on relevant Stockkeeping Unit records if you use location-specific replenishment setups.
  3. Open Configurator Setup and set the Production Order Ref. Nos. field to a number series. This series is used to generate the shared Reference Number that links all orders in a hierarchy.
  4. If your hierarchy displays production order component and routing lines on the sales document, configure the Show Source Document Info On [document type] and related toggles to control which information panels appear.
  5. Optionally enable Only show top level Prod. Lines on Sales Documents if you want the component and routing line panels on the sales document to show only the top-level production order's lines, not every sub-order's lines.
  6. Open a Sales Order with a configured line (see the Configuration Search article for how to set up the configuration itself).
  7. On the sales line, go to Configurator → Create Supply Order (Shift+Ctrl+P). The system creates a production or assembly order linked to the sales line.
  8. To view all related orders, go to Configurator → Show Order Hierarchy (Shift+Ctrl+O) on the sales line.
  9. To manage the full hierarchy (refresh, replan, or delete), use Configurator → Handle Orders in Hierarchy.

Related Features

Supply Order Hierarchy depends on Configuration Search to provide a matched item or BOM on the sales line — there must be a configuration result before a supply order can be created. The Sales Price Calculation feature (if enabled) integrates with the hierarchy: once orders are created, you can use Get Expected Standard Cost to calculate the total cost across the hierarchy and optionally update the sales price. The hierarchy view also surfaces Purchase Orders and Assembly Orders created for sub-components, making it a central visibility tool for the broader order management process in conjunction with standard BC purchasing and production.

User Stories

US-01: Create a supply order from a configured sales line

As a Sales Order Processor
I want to create a production or assembly order directly from a configured sales line
So that production can begin as soon as the order is confirmed, without manually creating orders separately

Setup:

  1. On a Sales Order with a configured line, select the line.
  2. Go to Configurator → Create Supply Order (Shift+Ctrl+P).
  3. The system determines the replenishment type from the item or SKU setup and creates the appropriate order (Production Order or Assembly Order).
  4. The order is linked to the sales line via a shared Reference Number.

Note: The type of order created (production or assembly) is controlled by the Replenishment System and Manufacturing Policy / Assembly Policy fields on the Item Card or Stockkeeping Unit Card — not by a setting in Sales Configurator.

US-02: Mark an item as part of the supply hierarchy

As a Production Planner
I want to mark specific items as members of the Sales Configurator hierarchy
So that the system automatically explodes multi-level BOMs and creates linked sub-orders for those items

Setup:

  1. Open the Item Card for the component or sub-assembly item.
  2. Enable Include in Sales Configurator Hierarchy.
  3. Verify that the item's Replenishment System is set to Prod. Order or Assembly, and that the Manufacturing Policy or Assembly Policy is set to Make-to-Order.
  4. Repeat for each item in the BOM that requires a dedicated supply order.

Note: Items without this flag are treated as standard stock items and will not generate separate linked orders when the hierarchy is created or refreshed.

US-03: Mark items in a BOM hierarchy automatically

As a Production Planner
I want to automatically flag all items in a BOM as hierarchy members with one action
So that I do not have to open each item card individually when setting up a new configurable product

Setup:

  1. Open the Item Card for the top-level finished item.
  2. Go to Configurator → Mark Items in Hierarchy.
  3. The system traverses the item's BOM structure and enables Include in Sales Configurator Hierarchy on all Make-to-Order components found.
US-04: View the full supply order hierarchy for a sales line

As a Sales Order Processor
I want to see all production, assembly, and purchase orders linked to a sales line in one indented view
So that I can track the status of the entire supply chain for a customer order at a glance

Setup:

  1. On a Sales Order line with an active supply hierarchy, go to Configurator → Show Order Hierarchy (Shift+Ctrl+O).
  2. The Orders in Hierarchy page opens, showing all linked orders in an indented tree.
  3. Use Show/Hide Components to toggle the display of component and subcontractor lines.
  4. Select any order row and click Show Document to open the underlying production, assembly, or purchase order.
US-05: Refresh supply orders after a configuration change

As a Production Planner
I want to refresh all orders in a sales line's hierarchy after the configuration or quantity has changed
So that all linked supply orders reflect the latest requirements

Setup:

  1. On the Sales Order line, go to Configurator → Handle Orders in Hierarchy.
  2. A menu appears with options: Create and Refresh, Refresh without Create, Replan, Delete, or Cancel.
  3. Select Refresh without Create to update quantities and dates on existing orders without creating new ones, or Create and Refresh to also create orders for any newly included items.
  4. The system processes all orders in the hierarchy and reports how many were handled.
US-06: Replan supply orders in a hierarchy

As a Production Planner
I want to replan all supply orders in a sales line's hierarchy
So that dates and quantities are recalculated based on the current delivery date and BOM structure

Setup:

  1. On the Sales Order line, go to Configurator → Handle Orders in Hierarchy.
  2. Select Replan from the menu.
  3. The system replans all production and assembly orders linked to this sales line via the shared Reference Number.
US-07: Delete supply orders from a hierarchy

As a Sales Order Processor
I want to delete all supply orders linked to a sales line
So that I can cancel production if the customer cancels the order or if the configuration must be redone from scratch

Setup:

  1. On the Sales Order line, go to Configurator → Delete Supply Order, or go to Configurator → Handle Orders in Hierarchy and select Delete.
  2. If lower-level orders exist in the hierarchy, the system warns that the entire hierarchy will be deleted and asks for confirmation.
  3. Confirm to delete all linked production, assembly, and purchase orders associated with this sales line.

Note: This action is irreversible. All orders at all levels of the hierarchy are permanently deleted.

US-08: Open the supply order linked to a sales line

As a Sales Order Processor
I want to open the production or assembly order linked to a sales line with a single click
So that I can review or update the order without having to search for it manually

Setup:

  1. On the Sales Order line, go to Configurator → Open Supply Order (Shift+Ctrl+O).
  2. The linked production or assembly order opens directly.
US-09: Manage the hierarchy from within a production order

As a Production Planner
I want to initiate hierarchy handling directly from a production order
So that I can refresh or replan the full order set without going back to the sales order

Setup:

  1. Open the Production Order (Released, Firm Planned, etc.) that is part of a Sales Configurator hierarchy.
  2. Go to Configurator → Handle Orders in Hierarchy from the production order.
  3. Select the desired action (Create and Refresh, Refresh without Create, Replan, or Delete).
  4. The system identifies all linked orders via the shared Reference Number and processes the hierarchy.
US-10: Transfer the supply hierarchy when converting a quote to an order

As a Sales Order Processor
I want to convert a sales quote to a sales order and have all linked supply orders automatically re-linked to the new order
So that the production or assembly work already started on the quote is not lost

Setup:

  1. On a Sales Quote with configured lines and linked supply orders, use the standard BC Make Order action.
  2. Sales Configurator automatically transfers the configuration entries and re-links all supply orders (production, assembly, purchase) to the new sales order lines.
  3. Open the new sales order and use Show Order Hierarchy to verify the transfer.
US-11: View production component and routing lines directly on the sales order

As a Sales Order Processor
I want to see the production order component and routing lines in panels at the bottom of the sales order
So that I can review what will be produced for each line without opening the production order separately

Setup:

  1. Open Configurator Setup and ensure the relevant Show Source Document Info and Show Entry Info toggles are enabled for Sales Orders.
  2. Open a Sales Order that has linked production orders.
  3. The Prod. Order Component Lines and Prod. Order Routing Lines panels appear at the bottom of the order, linked to the selected sales line.

Note: If Only show top level Prod. Lines on Sales Documents is enabled in Configurator Setup, only the component and routing lines from the top-level production order are shown, not those from sub-orders.

US-12: Control which production order levels appear on the sales document

As a IT Manager
I want to limit the component and routing line panels on the sales document to only show top-level production order lines
So that the sales order view is not cluttered by sub-component details from deeper levels of the hierarchy

Setup:

  1. Open Configurator Setup.
  2. Enable Only show top level Prod. Lines on Sales Documents.
  3. Save. The component and routing panels on Sales Orders and Sales Quotes will now filter to the top-level production order only.
US-13: Insert a BOM line manually on a configured sales line

As a Production Planner
I want to manually insert an additional BOM component line on a configured sales line
So that I can add one-off components that are not part of the standard BOM but are required for this specific order

Setup:

  1. On the Sales Order line, go to Configurator → Insert BOM line.
  2. Select the component item to add.
  3. The component is added to the production order linked to this sales line.
US-14: Insert a routing line manually on a configured sales line

As a Production Planner
I want to manually insert an additional routing operation on a configured sales line
So that I can add special operations required for this specific customer order that are not in the standard routing

Setup:

  1. On the Sales Order line, go to Configurator → Insert Routing line.
  2. Select the operation to add.
  3. The routing line is added to the production order linked to this sales line.
US-15: Configure the Production Order Ref. Nos. number series

As a IT Manager
I want to assign a dedicated number series for production order reference numbers used by the hierarchy
So that all orders in a sales configurator hierarchy share a traceable, unique reference identifier

Setup:

  1. Open Configurator Setup.
  2. Set the Production Order Ref. Nos. field to the desired number series.
  3. Save. All subsequently created supply hierarchies will use this series for their shared Reference Number.
US-16: Use location-specific hierarchy inclusion via SKU

As a Production Planner
I want to control hierarchy inclusion at the stockkeeping unit level rather than the item level
So that the same item can be a make-to-order component at one location and a stock item at another

Setup:

  1. Open the Stockkeeping Unit Card for the item/location combination where the item should be included in the hierarchy.
  2. Enable Include in Sales Configurator Hierarchy.
  3. Ensure the SKU's replenishment setup is set to Prod. Order or Assembly with Make-to-Order policy.
  4. When a hierarchy is created or refreshed for a sales line at this location, the SKU's flag is used instead of the item-level flag.
