Container Measurements and Value

Feature Overview

Container Measurements and Value is the part of Purchase Container Handling that deals with the physical and financial data of a container shipment. While the Inbound Container feature handles which lines belong to a container and posts the receipts, this feature handles what those lines weigh, how much space they take up, how many packages are involved, and what the total order value is.

Two layers of measurement data exist: the container header level and the line level. At the line level, each open container line has fields for Receipt Net Weight, Receipt Gross Weight, Receipt Volume, and Total Package — these are the actual measured values recorded when goods are physically weighed or counted during unloading. There are also calculated fields on each line (Line Total Net Weight, Line Total Gross Weight, Line Total Volume) that are derived from item master data (weight per unit multiplied by quantity). At the header level, the container card shows summary totals: Order Total Net Weight, Order Total Gross Weight, Order Total Volume, Total Package, Handling Net Weight, Handling Gross Weight, Handling Volume, Total Order Amount (LCY), and Total Quantity.

The summary values are not updated automatically in real time. You must click Calculate Content and Value on the container card to trigger the calculation. The app then reads all linked open purchase order lines, posted purchase receipt lines, transfer order lines, and transfer receipt lines to compute the totals. This calculation is blocked if any lines have already been posted (partial posting started) and blocked on containers that are already fully posted.

The Measured Weight field on the container header is a separate, manually entered field for recording the weight as measured by an external device such as a weighbridge — it is not computed by the app and is not part of the automatic calculation.

Getting Started

  1. Open the Inbound Container Card for a container that has open lines assigned.
  2. On the Open Container Lines sub-list, enter values in Receipt Net Weight, Receipt Gross Weight, Receipt Volume, and Total Package for each line that has been physically measured.
  3. On the container header in the Measurements and Value group, fill in physical container data: No. of Colli, Container Size (Feet), and Container Cubic Meters.
  4. If you have a weighbridge or external weight measurement, enter it in the Measured Weight field.
  5. Click Calculate Content and Value in the action bar.
  6. Confirm if prompted. The app reads all linked lines and computes the summary totals on the container header.
  7. Review the calculated values: Total Quantity, Order Total Net Weight, Order Total Gross Weight, Total Package, Order Total Volume, Total Order Amount (LCY), Handling Net Weight, Handling Gross Weight, and Handling Volume.
  8. The calculated values are stored on the container header and can be used for freight, customs, or warehouse documentation purposes.

Related Features

Container Measurements and Value works entirely within the Inbound Container feature — you cannot use it without a container record that has lines assigned. The line-level receipt weight and volume fields (Receipt Net Weight, Receipt Gross Weight, Receipt Volume) are written to the purchase receipt lines at posting and are therefore visible on Posted Container Lines as well. If the Purchase Order Management app (BC629) is installed, additional transport-related fields such as Expected Shipment Date and Vendor Transport Method appear on the open container lines and on the container card, giving additional logistics context alongside the measurement data.

User Stories

US-01: Enter actual measured weights and volumes on container lines before posting

As a Purchasing Agent
I want to record the actual receipt weight and volume for each line in the open container sub-list
So that the physical measurements from unloading are captured in Business Central alongside the order data

Setup:

  1. Open the Inbound Container Card for the container being unloaded.
  2. In the Open Container Lines sub-list, locate each line.
  3. Edit the Receipt Net Weight field to enter the actual net weight measured for that line's goods.
  4. Edit the Receipt Gross Weight field with the gross weight including packaging.
  5. Edit the Receipt Volume field with the actual volume measured.
  6. Edit Total Package with the number of physical packages for that line.
  7. Repeat for each line in the container.

Note: These fields write back directly to the corresponding purchase order or transfer order line. They are stored separately from the item master weight fields (Gross Weight, Net Weight, Unit Volume) which are read-only on the container line.

US-02: Calculate the total content and value of a container

As a Purchasing Agent
I want to trigger a calculation that sums up weight, volume, packages, and order value across all container lines
So that I have accurate totals on the container header for use in freight invoices, customs declarations, or receiving documentation

Setup:

  1. Open the Inbound Container Card.
  2. Ensure that lines are assigned and measurements have been entered on the open container lines.
  3. Click Calculate Content and Value in the action bar.
  4. If all lines are open (no partial posting yet), the calculation runs and updates the header fields.
  5. Review the updated values in the Measurements and Value group: Total Quantity, Order Total Net Weight, Order Total Gross Weight, Total Package, Order Total Volume, Total Order Amount (LCY), Handling Net Weight, Handling Gross Weight, and Handling Volume.

Note: The calculation also reads any posted receipt lines and transfer receipt lines linked to the container, ensuring that partially received containers still show correct totals.

US-03: Understand the difference between Order Total and Handling weight and volume

As a Purchasing Agent
I want to understand what the Order Total and Handling weight and volume fields represent
So that I use the correct figures when filling in freight or customs documents

Setup:

  1. Open the Inbound Container Card after running Calculate Content and Value.
  2. Order Total Net Weight, Order Total Gross Weight, and Order Total Volume represent the sum of the calculated line totals (item master weight × quantity) from purchase order lines and transfer order lines.
  3. Handling Net Weight, Handling Gross Weight, and Handling Volume represent the sum of the receipt-level weight and volume fields (the physically measured values entered on each container line).
  4. Use Order Total values for procurement-side documentation (values derived from item records).
  5. Use Handling values for logistics and freight documentation (values based on what was physically measured at receipt).
US-04: Record physical container size and colli count

As a Purchasing Agent
I want to record the physical dimensions of the container and the number of colli
So that this information is available for logistics planning and documentation

Setup:

  1. Open the Inbound Container Card.
  2. In the Measurements and Value group, enter No. of Colli (number of individual packages or bundles in the container).
  3. Enter the Container Size (Feet) (e.g. 20 or 40).
  4. Enter Container Cubic Meters for the total cubic capacity of the container.
  5. These fields are purely informational — they are not part of the automatic calculation but are available for printing or reporting.
US-05: Record a measured weight from a weighbridge

As a Purchasing Agent
I want to enter a measured weight figure from an external weighing device
So that the actual physical weight of the full container is stored alongside the calculated weight totals

Setup:

  1. Open the Inbound Container Card.
  2. In the Measurements and Value group, find the Measured Weight field.
  3. Enter the weight as read from the weighbridge or other measuring device.
  4. This value is stored as-is and is not affected by the Calculate Content and Value action.

Note: Measured Weight is a free-entry field for informational purposes. It can be used to compare against the calculated Handling Gross Weight to detect discrepancies.

US-06: View the total order amount across all lines in a container

As a Purchasing Agent
I want to see the total monetary value of all lines assigned to a container
So that I can cross-check against supplier invoices or freight value declarations

Setup:

  1. Open the Inbound Container Card.
  2. Run Calculate Content and Value.
  3. Review the Total Amount from Container Lines (LCY) field in the Measurements and Value group.
  4. This value is the sum of the line amounts in LCY across all linked purchase order lines and transfer order lines. For purchase lines in a foreign currency, the app converts to LCY using the currency factor on the purchase header.
US-07: Verify that calculation is blocked when posting has already started

As a Purchasing Agent
I want to understand when the Calculate Content and Value action is unavailable
So that I know why the calculation is blocked and how to proceed

Setup:

  1. Open the Inbound Container Card for a container where some lines have already been received (partially posted).
  2. Click Calculate Content and Value.
  3. If posted receipt lines exist for this container, the app checks whether they have quantity. If they do, a message is shown indicating which purchase receipt or transfer order line has already been posted, and the calculation is blocked.
  4. The calculation is also blocked if the container status is Posted.

Note: This protection exists because once posting has started, the line data is split between open order lines and posted receipt lines. The calculation still correctly reads both sources during normal operation; the block only applies when an inconsistent state is detected.

US-08: Access the Content and Value Setup from the container setup page

As a IT Manager
I want to navigate from the Inbound Container Setup to the Content and Value Setup
So that I can configure how weight and volume fields are populated from item and purchase data

Setup:

  1. Search for Inbound Container Setup and open it.
  2. Click Open Content and Value Setup in the action bar.
  3. This opens the Shipping Manager Setup page where the rules for weight and volume field mapping are configured.

Note: The Content and Value Setup is managed by the Shipping Manager component. Configuring it correctly ensures that item gross weight, net weight, and volume values flow correctly into the container line calculations.
